Music & language
Music and language are the same.
Both are way of communication but you are supposed to know / learn the rules.
There are different musics and also different languages. Each ones has those own rules.
If you wanna learn a language, you have to work on your vocabulary, your grammar...but according to me the main thing is to hear well. I mean, if you can't hear well, you can't catch the right words. That's the same in music: if you don't have the right notes you can't play with somebody else.
"Who that ? " - "Who dat?"
"What that ?" - "What dat?"
Apparently the same expressions but the manner of pronounce can indicate where are you coming from. American english is different than Irish english than British english than New Orleans english than Texas english... Diffrent by the accent, by expressions, by speaking habits and common by the root.
Thus you have different way to play a same style of music. New orleans jazz is different than New York jazz and Paris Jazz (because of influences, of history, of people, of cultures... I guess).

I'm sure of one thing, if can increase your capacity to communicate, you also increase your capacity to understand (people? the music? the world? the life?).
